Victor Mauger, born in England, immigrated to New York in 1855, initially importing metal goods. Around 1870, he started importing playing cards from Chas. Goodall & Son, known for their unique Ace of Spades in American decks. By 1873, Mauger began manufacturing his own cards, dropping Goodall in 1876 due to high import duties. His 1876 deck, 'The Centennial Exposition Deck', was the first to commemorate a fair, celebrating the world's fair in Philadelphia and the 100-year anniversary of the Declaration of Independence.Mauger's cards stood out with larger size (90mm x 62mm), Quadruplicates indices in all four corners, and pip colors inspired by popular European decks: Black Spades, Red Hearts, Yellow Diamonds, and Blue Clubs. The decorative Ace of Spades features the dates 1776 & 1876, along with the Latin phrase 'NUNQUAM RETRORSUM', translating to 'No Revoke' or 'Never Retreat'.
